Unsettlement Music creates hybrid music and theater works.

We foreground work that centers discourse, uniting disparate communities within shared creative spaces.

We make independent and eclectic pieces. We are a production, distribution and educational enterprise, and our work extends beyond the stage.

We pursue questions of history.

  • How does art represent, capture, or reflect the stories of the people who made it?

  • When we hear music, are we conscious of the sources and origins of its sounds, and of the experiences of the people who created them?

  • Can we harness that consciousness provocatively
    and creatively?

  • What histories are contained in music?

  • What is our agency within those histories?

The foundation of our work is relational: through sound and performance, we diagnose the roles we play in the histories around us.

Founded by composer, vocalist, and bandleader Ted Hearne, Unsettlement Music’s work has been at the heart of acclaimed collaborations with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Carnegie Hall, Komische Oper Berlin, Royal Ballet of London, New York City Ballet, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Münchener Biennale, Guggenheim Museum, and many more. These works are available to be licensed by third parties for performance.
